Jaguar 4.2 Manual gearbox options
r1_pete - 30/10/09 at 08:15 AM

5 Speed Manual boxes for the 60's and 70's 4.2 Jaguar engine are very rare and expensive.

I know folk on here have done some wierd and wonderful conversions. Does anyone know of, or done a manual conversion on one of these using other boxes and maybe a modified auto bellhousing?

Does the box from the later XJ series Jaguars fit?

Cheers.
Pete.

Later getrag boxes (XJ40 and X300) will fit with an aftermarket bellhousing but are hard to find and the bellhousing is expensive. More people are moving over to fitting 6 speed supra boxes but im not sure if you can get a bellhousing for it.

Is this for a kit?

No its for an E-Type, cos I'm 6'4, I need to go for a 2+2, and the automatic version is the least desirable, so cheapest, and if I could convert it for say £750, it would be worth doing.

Just fit a pinto and a type 9, much cheaper than that jag stuff

speedyxjs - 30/10/09 at 08:40 AM

Linky 1 using original manual box (included)

Linky 2 discussion about fitting getrag

Linky 3 using new fabricated box

Unfortunately, it looks like it may cast a few k's

Not a problem, won’t be long till that’s the national speed limit

Yes its getting that way, thanks for the info, will have a read....

Mr Whippy - 30/10/09 at 09:08 AM

you may laugh but I was looking at the prices of an xjs and the possiblitly of fitting either a 2ltr pinto or a 2.8 v6 fitted to a type 9.

after all its just a rwd car and their dead easy to change engines etc would also ditch the normal fuel tanks, replace with a small alloy tank and convert it to LPG instead.

After doing that, how much of the cars orginal 1800kg would that shed? I recon it would come down to about 1300kg or less

Wishfull thinking!!!

Engine and box with ancilleries weighs about 250 - 300 kg dependings if its V12 or AJ6

Watch Ebay, occasionally you will see a getrag 265 box appear, ideally you want the 5 speed box from a later 4.0 xjs as these were fitted to the supercharged XJR's and are very strong.

Make sure you get the whole lot, fly wheel, clutch and prop....

Make sure its good..... costs a lot to have rebuilt as special tools required.

Its a single casting specifically to fit JAG pattern so good xk, AJ6 and v12 engines, boxes also appeared in big BMW's although different bolt pattern

Price:

I paid £250 for mine last year, then another £100 for the prop, as its from the last of the line it has a TRT prop and dual mass flywheel.

A slight thread hijack, but on the same subject.
What manual gearbox options are there for more modern Jag V8s (such as the AJ26-AJ28)? Are they the same bolt pattern as the earlier ones?

So what is so heavy about the car? I don’t recall the body panels being all that thick tbh. Might just need a good strip down of things like aircon, spare tyre excess soundproofing etc and just keep down to the basics

No they are not. There is only one manual conversion i have seen done using the supra box but iirc the price for that was around 6k as the ECU needs to be changed and the dash reprogrammed so the gearbox warning doesnt light.

I read an article a while back about a guy race prepping his XJS. Dashboard, rear seats, door trims etc all removed and a race seat and roll cage fitted, the car weighed about 1490kg (i think XJS' are about 1600kg standard).

Shame
You can get 4lt V8 S-types for a song these days (I know, I have one as a tin-top), but I couldn't help think they would make great donor material if you could get a manual box to fit.
Mind you, the 3lt V6's had a manual option from the factory - I'm guessing, though, that these have different bolt patterns again

Yep

r1_pete - 30/10/09 at 10:11 AM

So are the XJ AJ, and V12 bellhousing bolt patterns the same?

No, the V12 is different. The bellhousings for V12 to getrag are much cheaper though

r1_pete - 30/10/09 at 10:21 AM

Mmm, OK thanks, I'm probably best holding out for a manual car in the 1st place then, looks like my meagre budget won't cover the conversion.

r1_pete - 30/10/09 at 10:31 AM

Would the box out of THIS fit?

mark chandler - 30/10/09 at 10:55 AM

Should be the best box, reverse is under 5th.

You can always list it as an aston martin DB7 3.2 manual box..... will make a fortune then

Regards Mark

speedyxjs - 30/10/09 at 11:28 AM

£1500 though is a lot for an XJ40. My donor was a 2.9 manual (although reverse was next to 1st) and i got that for £150. Took ages to find though.
