Idling problem - where to look next?
speedyxjs - 1/11/09 at 09:30 AM

This is really getting to me now. I thought the air leak, caused be the inlet manifold not properly tightened, was causing the engines inability to idle. After topping up the oil prawnabie sent to me (thanks alot mate ) i started her up but she still wont idle. I have looked everywhere i can think of to see if there is another air leak but cant find anything.
The only thing i can think of now is that it wont idle because i havnt connected the ecu to the fuel pump relay and the ignition on relay (dont have the latter yet).
Could this be the problem? Im not sure it could as it runs fine if you hold the throttle open.

ps Idle control valve works fine btw

Jags are very sensitive to air leaks, even knocking off the crankcase vent pipe or removing the air filter will screw things up.

Get a can of easystart for diesel engines, when running have a little squirt around all the inlet joints, if the revs rise you have the problem.

You said before its a later ECU, does it need lambda control?

On the throttle body check the butterfly, it should be open a tad, I cannot remember the measurement but if you have tried to correct poor idle twiddling here then that could explain things as the as the idle control will not be able to stabalise things as working outside its range.

Will get a can of easy start tomorrow.

Dont think it needs lambda control as the donor engine didnt have it.

Will double check the throttle tomorrow.

WD40 does the same thing as easy start doesnt it?

Thats what I used on the triumph engine anyway

WD 40 is safer than easistart as well. Brake cleaner does the job

WD will raise the revs a little, easy start will make it rev a lot, I think its because WD uses butane as the propellent, nothing to do with the oil.

If you have a porus casting then wd will not show this, easy start will as its a gas.

Cheap way is just to splash a little petrol about..... not the safe option it must be said.
