pinto timing

ok been changin the dizzy tonight, on the pinto (2.0)

i noticed the cam belt seems quite loose, and when you turn the engine over there is a tiny delay (is it called an engineers delay on lathes etc??? its like that)

how tight should these be, can the tensioner be adjusted ordo they wear out?

tdc, im pretty sure i have found the marks, jacko has been really help full but does anyone have any pics of the markers, just to double check,

when setting up the dizzy, am i right in thinking that aslong as tdc is set on one firing point, it doesnt matter which one (im not talking about ht leads or orders, yet)

and finaly, is the firing order 1,3,4,2

No sure about the other bits, but 1,3,4,2sounds right.

I would suggest not connecting it up 3,4,2,1 i.e. out by one post all the way round as it produces some interesting noises and flames

if you haven't got a tension gauge..... then you should be able to twist the belt 1/4 of a turn on the longest span

The Pinto has a belt tensioner, you need to slacken it's locking bolt & the pivot bolt (splined head) slightly so the tensioner can move, the carefully rotate the engine from the crankshaft pulley 2 full rotations clockwise, as you finish the 2nd rotation be careful that the crank doesn't "rock back" if a piston is under compression, then retighten the locking bolt followed by the pivot bolt. The tension will then be set correctly.

Only if fitted with a spring which most people take off as its unreliable.

You should be able to just manage 90deg twist on the longest run of the belt if the tension is correct.

TDC is the biggest notch on the crank pulley aligned with the rib on the ali cover. You can tell the rib as its chamfered to a point.

You can then put the dizzy in and align the rotor with one of the contacts in the cap. That become the plug lead foor cylinder 1. Then working clockwise IIRC you need 3, 4 and 2

Stick a pencil down the no1 plug hole to check for TDC, turn engine slowly and watch pencil. You'll see it rock at TDC
