Look what i found when i opened one of my Duratecs. I did know it had a bearing failure, but this was worse than i had expected.

has the bearing picked up and the halfs spun round, was the big end still together?

thats going to cost a pretty penny to sort out.

is it me or do duratec's allways seem to be killing bottom ends?

i was thinking of going duratec at some point but the more i hear about bottom end failures the more i think about brand new zetec

thatss severe lack of oil

Has that rod been welded?

The big ends are a known weak point on the duratec, and most high mileage engines in the scrappy will have a noisy bottom end.

The problems are with 150k+ mile engines in general.

It is always advised to fit heavy duty big end bearings and carefully check the crush on the bearings during assembly.

oh dear

How does the crank journal look ?

Looking at the general state of the rod & piston it doesn't look like its had regular oil changes either

Wow, impressive neglect/abuse from the previous owner!

I had to use a chisel to remove the rod and it was impossible to move the crank. The crank it worn out as well.

I have an other Duratec that has the butterfly problem.

So my plan is to build one good engine out of these two.

I have put some more pics in my archive.
