Pinto upgrade?
richwill - 1/12/09 at 11:06 PM

i currently have 2.0 l pinto in my luego velocity and run the standard fuel injection. I have no idea what sort of output this is giving and was considering some upgrades over the winter.
Can you guys give me some ideas of what to do.
I have to change the valve stem seals so what else can i do at the same time.

Slightly OT, but can you change valve stem seals without taking head off ?

If you have a tool to compress the valve springs then yes. Just make sure the cylinder you are doing is at TDC to stop the valve dropping into the cylinder.

I upgraded my pinto by fitting a zx9r engine instead. Best move i have made.

looking to keep the budget lo cost. I do have a 38DGAS and manifold i could fit but wasnt sure how much of a difference it would make.
Does anyone have an idea what output i may be getting from the current standard injection and what i would get with the 38DGAS.
I was also thinking of the Kent FR32 cam is this the one to go for.

get the head off and do a bit of porting as well Vizard did a book on porting and uprating the Pinto

If you are on a budget then I would look at bike carbs and a cam - FR32/33.

I ditched my pinto and upgraded to a 2 litre zetec.
Only cost me £400
Its the best mod i have ever done.

If your looking for a cam then there are a few old threads on the subject to help you pick one: linky
Kent, Piper and Newmans are all worth a look for starters, I've got a piper 285 for my 2.1 pinto (not had it running yet though)

The standard EFI is supposed to give you 115bhp, the biggest problem with it is that you can't easily re-tune it if you go for a lumpy cam

If your budget will stretch to it I'd have a look at bike carbs and megajolt.

Megajolt will sort out your ignition for any carbs you choose, it gives you a 3D system that you can map yourself (MAP sensor version easiest for a single carb setup like your 38DGAS / TPS version for multiple carbs, but the TPS version will work for either without too much hassle)
It shouldn't set you back more than £150 (less than most uprated dizzy's), but if you build the unit yourself and find the donor bits at the right price it could be a lot less
this site will give you an idea of whats involved: linky
its also ideal for sticking carbs on a zetec or other modern engines

If you get the shop around you should find a suitable set of bike carbs cheap enough (say less than £50 - but that might be a little out of date)
The biggest cost in the bike carbs can be the manifold, but if your any good with a welder you can buy a laser/waterjet cut flange and make your own (a fair bit of work, but not much cash )
Then you just need a couple of hours on the rollers to get it all setup (a good idea with any carbs) not sure what the best place near you is though

also have a look at this: linky

after selling the pinto and various ancillaries, the conversion only cost another £400.
