I built the engine a couple of years ago, and need to recheck the cam timing as its not running properly, but cant remember if i put in a 285 or 244 cam in?

as i had a couple of them anyway, i cant check the parts boxs !!

On a xflow cam does it say what it is on the front face (behind the drive cog) ??

i know it does at the other end, ie clutch end

As both are, i think, Piper cams they should have the number stamped on one end

Easier to just pull off the rocker cover and measure the overlap on the rockers I would have thought, just stick a timing wheel on the front, you can check its position as well.

As you say, stamped on the gearbox end, not under the sprocket. Could be worse though, the Holbay one I had in mine was scribed half way along the cam inbetween the lobes.

As far as i can remember the identification numbers are stamped on the rear face so you wont be able to check it without the engine out.

If you can find the spec's for the cams you could check the valve lift with a dial gauge and identify it that way, the 244 needs the valve cutouts in the pistons increasing so should have allot more lift than the 285.
