On my Zetec engined build I have come to the conclusion that is going to be impossible to make the engine mounts so that they are exactly positioned directly opposite each other.

Due to the location of the oil filter mounting on the off side that mount will have to be 50mm (2in) futher back than the nearside one which is restricted by the exhaust manifold.

My business is building boats and we always install engines, everything from 50kgs to a 2 tons each, on symetrical, balanced engine beds.

But looking at transverse car engines, their mounts are all over the place!

Should I just stick the mounts where I can and not worry about it?

My engine lays over at 45 deg so it would be impossible for mine to be symmetrical.

No it will not be a problem so long as the weight is supported properly. Idealy you don't want to put excessive force on any one mount ( i.e. the gearbox mount ) . if the engine can stay upright on it's mounts only without the gearbox GR8!. if it requires light preasure to hold it in place that's fine.. If your struggling to keep it from topling over then you need to try and get the pivot point better if you can.

I have yet to see a FWD car with symetcical mountings.
