Ive decided im going to try test fire my engine in the next few days, (hopefully tomorrow if all goes well!)

just a few more questions:

1. Can i wire the ignition coil straight to a battery, i have my loom but havent started installing it yet, but i assume you can just put 12v straight to the coil and the dizzy will do the rest?

2.Is the starter motor and the coil the only things that will need and power to get it going?

3. I believe the one fluid i will definatly need in the engine is oil, the engine still has the oil pressure sender in it, so how can i use this to make sure the oil is gettin round? Will there be a resistance change across the sender?

Finally and last tips before i try and fire it?

(dont worry i will make sure i have a video camera on hand when i do try)

Will it be a sudden drop in resistance when its at pressure? or will it be a gradual drop as the pressure builds?

And am i right in thinking that i need to turn it over without any power to the coil first, to check the pressure is up, before firing?

is it a oil pressure sender or a oil pressure switch? Switch is present on every engine

And a switch obviously wotks as a switch, normal closed (so witch opens if pressure is up)


Just put a inline fuse in place for the coil, if something is wrong the fuse blows otherwise you might fry the coil or anything else.

what i did on my vauxhall engine with ford edis ignition is this

wired the edis, coil, and starter solenoid straight to the battery. the starter solenoid was done via a starter button.

oil was the only fluid i had too. i made sure the engine was turned before starting (to get oil pressure up) as the engine would only run 20secs at a time

i didn't use any way of checking the oil pressure (silly) as i forgot. as far as i know it didn't cause any damage anyway. the guy who built my engine did tell me it made good pressure so i'm not hugely worried by it

You need ow if its a sender or a switch. A sender wont necessarily 'light the little light'.

If youve put oil in it, then unless you connect a pressure gauge, theres no real way of telling if the oil pump is working.

It depends on whether its EFI or carbs. A carb engine just needs power to the coil and starter. An EFI system needs power to lots of other stuff - normally via the ECU.

The only fluids you need in the engine are OIL, WATER and FUEL - (preferrably not mixed! )

Good luck. Dont lean over the engine when turning it over. I learnt this the hard way, and ended up with no eyebrows from an old Fiat X1/9. Worst case, something will fly off and hit you.

What engine is it, what's the ignition system?

How is fuel delivered?

its a carb engine running of gsxr600 carbs.

for the first fire im going to try just gravity feed, and spray a little bit in the carbs to get her going.

Im going to go over now and try to have a fiddle, fingers crossed there will be a lovely video being posted up later today!

and what ignition system are you using?

my engine has a distributor on, with a single ignition coil that feeds the dizzy

ah, yeah, i remember now lol. i forgot my old E30 (with an E36's engine in it) had a distributor
