Big or Long?
tomgregory2000 - 22/2/10 at 07:54 PM

In my hunt for a silencer ive found a couple of options.

Either a short can with a big diameter (400mm L X 150mm Dia with a 3" bore) or a longer can but with a smaller diameter (630mm L X 120mm Dia with a 3" bore)?

Now this is coming from my turbo which should act a a bit of a silencer and i want it to be quiet enough for trackdays.

So which would be quieter?

I've always heard diameter is better than length........ but pertaining to silencers I don't know.

Sorry..... someone had to break the ice.

Why not have both?

I have this fitted to mine and it dropped the db from 106 to around 95ish iirc.

So either buy one and weld a 3" inlet on, or ring CBS and ask them to do it for you (I think they are all made to order)!

Edited to say...
<---- 7" CBS silencer fitted!

In discussion with a specialist silencer supplier I learned that length can be an issue due to expansion, repeated heat cycling will destroy the central perforated tube. Extrapolating from this I would assume that with a turbo anywhere near the silencer short would be more reliable at least than long.

The damage is done with the girth................or so the mrs tells me!
