Hi all.
What is involved in converting a Pinto 2l (pre-205 block) from basic twin weber setup to bike carbs?
Any help advice gratefully received.
As well as possible gains, pitfalls (like cost etc.)

hi mate, i changed mine in the winter,
before i had a 38dgas carb, i have changed to fireblade carbs,
you will have to remove the pinto fuel pump if you have the standered one, easy job just 2 bolts. there are covers on ebay for 5 quid but are
v.v.v.v.vsimple to make, this will need to be replaced by a suitable pump for the carbs, low preasure, i have the fireblade pump. mine is gravity fed,
but my outlet on the fuel tank is at the top, this isnt a problem aslong as you can mount the fuel pump below the tank, i have and it runs v,well.
the carbs and manifold will need to be swapped for something that fits, so custom made pinto manifold and bike carbs, come up quite often.
then you may have issues with the vacuume advance, i dont really know about that as i have an electronic dizzy,
also the sump and rocker cover oil breather lines need to be re-routed, nice opertunity to fit a shiney catch tank.
then bike carbs away, so much better than my previous set up!
oh, bike carbs need to be re-jetted if not used on a pinto before.

a new manifold, a set of bike carbs and a rolling road session to get the most out of them
a manifold for a pinto should be dead easy. you need a flange plate - easily available, whatever carbs you go for, i got zx9r
and a fuel pump. the
easy way is to get one from the same bike. thats really it. that'll get you running. but as said rolling road will get the best out of it
I know this is based on Vauhalls and not the pinto but I found this quite useful

If you check out the fore sale items lotusmadandy has a set of zzr1100 and a manifold for sale.
I have the same ones on mine using the dizzy from my old 1.6 engine and it goes well, just needed to change the jets, my pump is mounted above the
tanks as its a modified tank from a spitfire and has no problems.
I have also been in Lotusmadandy's when he had his pinto engine, pulls like a train.
If you send him a u2u.
Jacko has some good info too.

^ a good point raised there (sort of...) are you keeping the dizzy ignition? if so, fine, if you want megajolt or something similar, or considering upgrading later, you might want to look for carbs with a throttle position sensor
do you mean you've got a pair of webber DOCE's at the moment ? (40's or 45's)
if so you won't get any more power out of bike carbs (might get a few more MPG though)
but assuming you mean a single (twin choke) carb then - as above bike carbs should do the job (ZX9R, R1, etc.....)
but whatever carb's you use - a little time on the rollers can make all the difference

I have zx6r ninja carbs on a boggs manifold main jet set to 1.6mm running stock bosch distributor and stock pinto mechanical fuel pump never missed a
beat on the old 1640 pinto and went very well
this set up is now on a 2040 pinto with kent fr32 cam with vernier i have just got a zx6r bike carb fuel pump which i may fit at a later date
ignition timming for this engine is set at 14 degrees btdc

Plenty of food for thought there. I'm not sure what to do yet. I really ought to concentrate on getting the car finished and running first I
suppose, just thought it may be easier to sort carbs before it's finished rather than retro fit?
The carbs I have at the mo are the stock twin choke weber as far as I can tell, probably the smallest possible to make it go, so I'm sure bike
carbs will give me a bit more ooomph!
Keep the info coming guiys, really appreciated.
