Intercooler as a Radiator??
MakeEverything - 7/3/10 at 10:57 PM

Ive got a pair of renault 5 intercoolers, and i was wondering if i could use one of them (the larger one) as a radiator?

I don't see why not but I doubt that they will be very efficient as water-air heat exchangers as they are designed as air-air heat exchangers and this will affect the design of the cores. You just need to look at them to see this. You will also have the hassle of making up suitable hoses and you need to check that they will handle the water pressure (I think they should be okay up to 1 bar or so)

I think I'd look for a radiator or perhaps a heater matrix if you are needing something smaller. These are both designed for water-air transfer.

Craig.

polo radiators are only £22 +vat from northern radiators. tried and tested etc. i'd go with one of them

Intercoolers are thick radiators thin, as water aluminium air is more efficient than air aluminium air.

Won`t work well.

£33 for a rad is a steal. go get a price for a rad on your tintop

sell the inter cooler and use the money from that to get the proper thing.

Id also go for a polo rad. Not sure an intercooler will be man enough.

they wont work well, the core sections are too large...

i have a subaru impreza rad here if you want it??

The standard Polo Rad approach is too big for my application (physically). I was wondering if i could use two smaller area rads such as the ones used on the Ultima GTR which uses two slim rads.
I have two air ducts in the side of the car that is begging for two nice ali rads to be mounted for maximum efficiency.

Ill have a rethink. Ive been looking at mounting the radiator horizontally and ducting air through from below. Ife got loads of space that way!!

The other alternative is to use the front of the car and duct the hoses through the transmission tunnel.

Bike rads off ebay maybe?

What about heater matrices like I suggested? You'd probably need 4 or so to make up the same area as a radiator but they are various sizes and are designed for water to air heat exchanging. I've actually thought of using a heater matrix to supplement my Rover V8 cooling as it is marginal with the larger Polo rad. Was planning to mount it under the middle of the bonnet just forward of the scuttle.

Anything is possible, but i didnt really want four radiators, though they could be hidden out of the way at the front with four little fans....
