Normally only there to stop joe public sticking there fingers in and to stop other foreign bodies getting stuck in the belts. It will run happily without them

looks pretty without it, but one stone, and you engine could be toast

Lost an engine that way many moons ago, well the engine was still there but didn't work to well.

I can vouch for the fact that if you go into a gravel trap at the side of a track, then it's nearly guaranteed that a stone or two will get into the cambelt area cause the belt to miss a few teeth and throw the timing out.

I used to leave mine off.

Then, the other day, I was checking over the engine and found a lose bolt had dropped out and was sitting between the belt and timing pulley- ready to be sucked in on first turn over!!!

Loctite and cover going on now!

Cheers,
James
