Vernier Pulleys
Barksavon - 15/3/10 at 01:12 PM

I,m taking my 2.0l Pinto powered kit car to be set up on a rolling road in about 6 weeks. It will be fitted with twin Dellorto DHLA 40's. The rest is standard although recently rebored to +0.5mm with new pistons etc etc. I'm thinking about fitting a vernier pulley to allow for fine tuning of the cam timing but not sure whether its worthwhile with a standard camshaft. Anyone any views, any tips also for the best BHP gains without going too mad, its a road car that might get the odd track day if it behaves

My vote goes for fast road cam and vernier, have you thought about converting to bike carbs?

Cheers

Rich

Rich, Yes ive thought about bike carbs but as ive got the dellorto's and manifold think i'm gonna stick with them ....for this year anyway....

with a fast road cam, injection head and twin 40 s on our otherwise standard 2 litre pinto we got only 110 bhp when had a quick power run at Detling last year, that i was a bit disapointed with.
Might been able to get more if i put it in for a major tune.

had you had it setup on the rollers before ?
which cam have you got ?

we had the engine set up at a at a place recommended to us after fitting the cam, vernier pulley, head and carbs.do not think they used a rolling road
Was quite happy with the performance and to be honest expected it to be more than 110 bhp. Might be worth seeing what else can be extracted from it.
Did first track day day last week and had hopped for quicker acceleration so may look to play around with it in a while.
Bike carbs would be obvoius or maybe Zetec.

the zetec (or duratec) will probably give you the best results for your cash

but if you want to get any more out the pinto you should look at getting a lumpy(er) cam and some head work done (even if you don't go as far as big valves)
the EFI head is better than the old carb'd one as standard but there is still alot of room for improvement

changing to bike carbs is unlikley to give you anymore top end power on there own

also what ignition are you using ?
have you though about a distributorless setup (like megajolt) - you could fit it now and keep it when/if you swap to a more modern engine like a zetec
(you'll need to get somethink like this if you want to run carb's on a zetec as they don't have dizzy's)
