Daughter has just bought a 206 1997 there appears to be a problem with gear selection. I think its a linkage problem not had time to look yet. Are there any inherent problems and if so any easy fixes

it could be many things like the linkage rods worn,clutch worn/warped or there is a metal pin that holds the gear selector onto the shaft at the back of the gearbox these wear/come loose



what engine size and how many miles

apparently whatever it is has happened before . so looks like a bodge has been made. Ive not driven it since it broke sounds like you can get 3rd but not first

1,4 engine 70k on the clock

Seem to remember that Wheeler Dealers did a 205 with a similar problem, turned out to be the ball joints at the end of the gearbox linkages (think it was a quick and easy fix)

(That's a perfect opportunity for you to buy in some beer and watch Dave non stop until that episode is repeated, in the interests of research obviously)

Put the drivers seat a click further forward or take the floor mat out from under the clutch pedal - seriously!

Think its a similar layout to the Saxo
There's a Pin that connects the gear change rod to the selector mechanism, this can wear and eventually fall out (known fault)
Also as already said above, Check and lubricate the selector mechanism (Ball joints)

*If* its the Pin that's the problem (and it is a similar to the Saxo) its easier to remove the Air Filter box & piping and do it from above
Rather than fiddle with it from underneath

Same gearbox as the 1.4 Rovers if the engine or gearbox has been out the external rod linkages and bell crank quite often get bent.

Also the clutch release bearing is tiny and really not up to the job not unknown for them to come adrift from the fork.
