those of you who are paying attention will recall my last drive resulted in a ride on the back of receovery truck due to over heated engine.
well, finally I got the head back and fitted it all together.
for fun, ok, not that much fun. I thought I'd see if the brand new thermostat opens in a pan of boiuling water.
guess what? it did not. so I compared it to the old one I replaced and gues what, that one did, about 90 degree C.
hmmmm, how likely is it that this was what caused my engine to overheat?
I did drill a 4 mm hole in it but surely there would have not been enough water flow so the car would not have made a journey of any distance with a
closed thermostat?
most strange. (and bloody expensive).
If it opened at 90 degrees in a pan of boiling water, it would have opened at 90 degrees in the car? I run my crossflow hotter than that and its been in the car for 18 months and done 600 miles like it with no problems.
yes it would - that was what the old thermostat did , the one I junked (well put in a box actually).
the new one remained closed even in boiling water, then I just held it in the flame for a bit and still not opening.

Why did you drill a 4mm hole in it?
It acts as a second bypass to stop the front half of the head overheating. Also aids bleeding the sytem.

Doesn't need to be big just needs to let air through. All the 4mm hole needs to be is at the top of the of the thermostat area.
