Smoke on startup
speedyxjs - 1/4/10 at 06:40 PM

Im getting a little worried about the smoke im getting on startup. The smoke can be seen at 0.47 here.

I know white smoke is water but i would call this more of a pale grey although i have never seen proper 'white smoke'.

The head gasket was changed when i first got the engine and stripped it down and the manual torque settings (3 stages) were followed.

ETA the smoke clears after about a minute of running.

its condensation, mine does the same every time it starts.

Black/blue smoke are the colours you want to look out for

or white smoke that doesnt clear when warm.

Check the oil on the dipstick carefully if it's got a white emulsion on it the oil could be contaminated with water suggesting a head gasket, if it's clear it's fine. I would suggest that as mentioned it is just condensation on start up, what you will also find that if you do not run the engine up to full working temperature emulsion will build up in the cam covers. This will all go when it's on the road and fully warmed up. Barry

I would say its just condensation
which disappear once you have her properly up to temperature

Anther one for condensation, if the 'smoke' was blue and only at startup would indicate stem seals, nothing serious
