Intercooler and fan

I saw this item off an MR2 on eBay:

I was wondering if a fan is really ever required on an intercooler and how you would control it? Presumably the Toyota ECU knows the intake air temperature and controls fan operation from that.

It's not a random question. I'll have an intercooler on my car but it won't be front mounted and I'm concerned about airflow through it at low speeds. I don't mind fitting a small fan but if so I'm going to have to come up with something cunning to control it.

Looks like a home made effort he probably has it wire through a switch and relay

why control it? no harm in it running all the time.

MR2's have an engine bay switch mounted on the lid to control those fans

I'm not sure its worth putting a fan on an intercooler

I would put my money on a charge cooler system with a remote radiator running a 12v water pump constantly............

Use a Bosch pump (same as Davis Craig but cheaper)

A GT4 charge cooler (better than the cheap ebay rubbish)

and a Fiat Cinquecento Radiator

This is THE mod for an MR2 Turbo, they have really bad engine/inlet heat problems due to their intercooler position

Cool inlet temp on a turbo Locost Done!!!

I used a MR2 alloy intercooler with a sucker fan mounted, i control it via using a 40 degree thermal switch and relay-works quite well ...there are a couple of photos in my archieve

Thanks for the interesting replies guys. Some food for thought there. I hadn't considered an air to water charge cooler.
