Checking type 9 oil
55ant - 7/4/10 at 12:15 PM

Hi all

got the afternoon off and would like to check the oil level in the type 9 box as i think it is dripping v.v.v slowly. is it a case of removing the top plate and having a look?

also what should be used to top it up, i have seen so many conflicting views adfter searching on this site.

should be filled up to the bottom of the oil fill plug. don't know if you can see the fill plug if you take the cover off though. easiest way, remove the drain plug, you might be able to get your little finger in to check, but i'd just top it up til it dribbles back out the hole. do it carefully you might be able to calculate how much it took and work out if its losing any

Correct grade is sae 80 gear oil or sae 75/90 --- the wheels won't fall off if you use ATF or even 10w/40 or 20w/50 engine but don't use EP80 or EP 90

Correct level is about a finger width below level plug --- Ford switched to a lower oil level because of leaks but didn't alter the level plug. If you stick your finger in and can touch the surface of the oil all id OK.

Hmm, whats so bad about ep80 or 90??
I have assumed (probably wrongly ) that ep 80 is pretty much the same as a 75/90 gear oil?

As long as its not GL5 spec oil then its fine.

Most GL5 oils contain additives which corrode brass which over time doesnt do the boxes any good.

I use one of the castrol ones in mine, cant remember which off the top of my head though.
