Rocket to Type 9

hi there,

here's a question for you Ford parts experts.

What is required to swap from a Tyoe E Rocket box to a Type 9. These are mated to a Zetec in a 7-type of vehicle (my buddies Westfield). The Rocket is failing and he has a type 9 in the shed.

1) new prop? or is it the same length
2) clutch bits?
3) where does the gear lever end up (further back I hope)
4) speedo connection?
5) reverse switch
6) oil fill plug location?

Anything else to think about? Is it a weekend project, or should I not offer to help!

Matt

If it is a true Rocket box then it has a close ratio gear set, replacing it with a standard type 9 will give an awfull 3.6 to 1 first gear. This is the most disapointing part of the swap.
The 0.82 to 1 5th is nice for crusing.
The input and output splines are the same, the box is longer so as well as needing a slightly shorter propshaft, the gear lever will be a little further back and so will the gearbox mount

Mr _GSXR is easily distracted today

...so is posting on my behalf.

The old box is a standard type E (as far as I know). Car came with nothing in the way of documentation or information, and I've not got around to measuring the ratios.

I did think about getting a new 1st gear kit ( £200 from Burton ) but don't know if I'm brave enough / have enough time to dismantle the 'box. How easy is it to fit a new 1st gear set ?

Cheaper not to use first...

We pulled one apart 25 years ago and rebuilt, took a couple of hours... much less than relocating loads of stuff.

i woud rebuild the old box they are quite simple and easy , or just look for another box,
