flak monkey - 21/4/10 at 04:55 PM

oops what happened?

nib1980 - 21/4/10 at 05:00 PM

gear puller didn't work and the pulley snapped, so i decided to gringd the rest opff, and guess what the grinder slipped aND Has trashed the crank and oil pump.

lets just say i'm poorly and making bad decisions

Sounds like it got dropped!

Some new parts can come from Toyota if you know the part number. I own an MR2 and they still provide parts for the car. The MR2 owners club could help. If not you could try RAW, although after the owner retired I'm not sure at what capacity the business is still running.

Fensport do many parts, but I think its mostly upgraded parts. They should be able to help you though.

if i'm looking for a new engine, what engine is the same? and MR2 mk 1?

blockhead_rich - 21/4/10 at 05:20 PM

BTW

Mel @ RAW has not retired just yet!

Probably cheaper to get a replacement 2nd hand engine IMO.

What revision is your 4AGE? The MR2 MK1 came with a standard and supercharged engine, not sure which revision it was though. Thats probably your best source for a cheap engine. I think your then onto super desirable AE86 and imported models.

Just to make you all feel sick, I was doing some work at Toyota engine plant in Deeside last summer. I noticed they had around 16 late revision 4AGE sitting on the shelf along with unused T50 gearboxes.
"Old stock, been here years" they told me.
"Awesome, I'll take one, please" I replied
"Can't I'm afraid, we classed them as scrap to avoid tax on our assets"

I then had to watch them put them into a skip to be melted down, for tax reasons? Couldn't even persuade the forktruck operator to sell one to me.

Yep Mel is still at RAW I spoke to him yesterday. He has only just come back from an op (I hope he dont mind me saying).
Toyota do supply parts for these engines still as mentioned above and if you only want to go for parts then go direct other than that check the JPSC web site. I think there is an engine for sale on there a silver top.

This does not look too good for my soon to be purchase (black top 4age Striker). Lets hope mine lasts longer!

nib1980 - 21/4/10 at 05:40 PM

apparently this was from an AE86, hence me being so pissed off.

nib1980 - 21/4/10 at 05:50 PM

would a 20v crank fit a 16v engine?

or could i make the 16v exhaust and inlet fit the 20v?

cs3tcr - 21/4/10 at 05:59 PM

Is the block a 3 rib or 7 rib? Also, what are the bearing journal sizes?

If its a 3 rib, then look for a 4AG out of pre-87 MR2s and AE86s. If its a 7 rib, then any post 87 should work for the crank. As for the oil pump and pulleys, these will fit any years, but try to source a later oil pump ("red top" or 20 valve).

I've got a spare block, oil pump, pump housing, f'ed crank, rods etc. You could have them for free, but shipping would be a little expensive.

Werner Van Loock - 21/4/10 at 06:37 PM

as long as it isnt the desireable phase 3 16valve (aka small port) as those are expensive and very hard to find.

And i know as i have one of those and would like a spare one.

JimSpencer - 21/4/10 at 06:57 PM

Hi

If its from an AE86 it's the phase1 4AGE, basically the same as the one in the Mk1 MR2, certainly for the bits you need.

Be best to get hold of a complete engine and they're normally easy to get from the normal online auction site or use Findapart or similar.

well i've just picked up a complete mk1 MR2 engine for £150 so fingers crossed i can put the 2 together.

many thanks

COREdevelopments - 22/4/10 at 08:25 PM

Good luck this time, and keep the angry grinder away from the engine at all times!

I have got a suitable engine in an early MR2 that would suit you. Forged pistons, Kent cams, Jenvey TBs, Omex 500 and comes complete with a very decent MR2 if you wanted. Make me an offer as it needs to go anyway.

I have had many a 4age and am now using a supercharged 20v in my Striker and must say that they are a very good strong little engine.
