Best, ie cheapest, way to get a high ratio Type-9
Steve Lovelock - 9/5/10 at 07:49 PM

I have a type-9 mated to a Vauxhall Redtop that is getting a little dificult to change down to 2nd. It is also from a P100 so the ratios are too low. So I figure I should try and get a replacement gearbox with higher ratios. However, I am not the nank of England at the moment so need a cost effective way of doing that.

Does anybody know what cars had higher ratio type-9 boxes in as standard? And what is the cheapest way of getting one?

I don't want to spend much time on it either so a swap to an alternative type of box is not a solution.

Cheers

Only the P100 box had the v.low 1st gear. Just swap it for another capri/sierra box. Pretty cheap on e-bay. Some have even given them away on here.

The locost way is bigger circumference wheels/tyres

IIRC the P100 may have the longer type bell housing and first motion shaft? Even with the saloon type 9 first is way too low, the v6 box may have better ratios?

just out of interest, when are you the nank of england and what does the position involve?

Check the length of the input shaft and length of the bell housing when you remove it.
I think it will be standard sierra length, if so then a standard type 9 will bolt straight on and the ratios will be 3.6, 1.97, 1.3, 1 and 0.82.
The V6 box is 3.36, 1.81, 1.2, 1, and 0.82, but it's not a simple fit, either get the input shaft shortened, which needs the box dismantling, or the Caterham spacer that goes between the V6 box and the 4 cylinder bellhousing, this requires the engine moving forward about 30mm.
