Is anyone using a Lexus is200 engine/box?
fha772 - 20/5/10 at 12:02 PM

Just started looking for an engine for my Haynes roadster chassis.

I've been looking at, different units to the usual Ford/Vauxhall offerings.

I'm not interested in a BEC, i think they are best on 2 wheels

I have looked at Nissan's 200Sx 1.8 & 2.0 turbo's, also BMW's various engines, And Saab turbo's.

Then today, while thumbing through the Autotrader, i saw a Lexus IS200.

They seem to be a very tunable engine, and have plenty of grunt, to start with.

Has anybody used this unit, or know anyone who has?

I'm just wondering if it'll fit in the Haynes Chassis...

I might be wrong but didn't they use the W50 or W58 gearbox? (similar to the Supra box)

It's a Toyota in a posh frock, isn't it?

vinny1275 - 20/5/10 at 12:33 PM

Also, isn't that 2litre engine a straight 6? might be too long to fit in a 7....

IS200 engine is very uneconmical, and not that powerful. (150bhp from an NA 2l 6cly is hardly ground breaking.)
As above its straight 6

Better off with V6 supra lump.

It is a straight six and quite tall too, twin cam vvt so the hieght is full length too.

IS Lexus is Toyota Altezza derrived, but, the sporting Altezza had a hot 4 cylinder engine which never made it into the Lexus.

The IS300 is the same size 6 pot but 3.0L, if you can find an LE it has steering wheel gear change / auto, swmbo has one.

Forget the is200 6 cylinder.
Look into the Altezza 3SGE four pot.
It has variable valve timing and a six speed box.
Over 200hp in standard form.
It is a tall engine though. There are usually a few on ebay.
Search "3sge engine"
Be sure to acquire the correct gearbox.

The is200 sounds heavy, tall, underpower and uneconomical.

It's perhaps not the best choice then...

what about a bmw 328, £200 for an engine and box with an easy 220bhp.

Fits in a seven too.

fha772 - 20/5/10 at 02:46 PM

Will the BMW 6, fit a standard chassis?

I was under the impression that it was too long.

franky - 20/5/10 at 04:08 PM

yep

fha772 - 20/5/10 at 04:53 PM

Mmmmmm...

So, a 3.5 6 cylinder(out of a 535i) would fit...

208bhp as standard, 450+bhp with twin turbo's...

That's what i got out of my 1990 535i

Has anyone fitted a BMW 6 cylinder on here?

franky - 20/5/10 at 04:58 PM

Now that is my kind of build!!

(But with a name like Franky, i never expected any less )

Cheers, Frank.

Just had a look on the 'Bay, there seems to be a good selection of 328i's.

I think this might be the way forward, am i right in thinking i need to swap the inlet for a M50 inlet? and fit a larger TB, to overcome the factory restriction?

franky - 21/5/10 at 10:27 AM

Yep, should give about 220bhp as standard then.

To put it swiftly and bluntly, the 6 cylinder uk spec engine is a heap of crap, pointless for a locost

The jap spec, 4 cyl altezza engine is the mirror opposite, and an excellent start point.

I spent a few seasons in autograss chasing the "coopers" cars (multiple uk national championship winners) which were powered by these!!

in fact here's a vid of one of them setting a world record:

I think I'm going to drop a BMW 328i lump in, it seems to tick all the boxes for me...
