help idea for reverse?
chunky2772 - 9/6/10 at 07:21 PM

im using a bike engine in my car does anyone have any good ideas or pics on making a reverse system without me have to use a quaife box. i wish they would change this new pointless rule as well!

Cheapest way seems to be ring gear between prop and diff turned by a starter motor

imp paul - 9/6/10 at 07:25 PM

a gear on the end of the diff could be made by hpc gears and a car starter motor with a relay job done approx £120

MNR reverse box.

I think something like this might work really well.

If you built a mildly adjustable mounting system based on the IRS rear end of most modern kits, you could rent it out just for IVA.

Minimal fuss to remove, no added weight once on the road, and takes the problem away for everyone.

Not sure if it would be counted as a "reverse" as I dont have the new IVA manual, but I dont see why it wouldn't be, as a starter motor/ring isn't driven by the main transmission or engine either.

edit to add, I don't mean the double kit liek the one I linked to, just one, driving the one wheel.

how big as in what dia, does this gear fitted to the prop shaft have to be? im not sure the starter motor would be powerfull enough if the gear fitted to the prop shaft was only small. and im worried a larger gear fitted to the prop shaft would unbalance the shaft!

try pm dan mnr zx12r as my mate just made him a gear and all is sweet

eznfrank - 9/6/10 at 07:46 PM

p.s. Do a little research on the starter motor too, some turn the wrong way. Ring gear not too big as has to fit in tunnel on mine. Not particularly fast or powerful but gets you through IVA if that's all you're after

motorcycle_mayhem - 9/6/10 at 07:46 PM

If you have Freeloader differential flange at the rear, I have a bespoke UJ flange to fit, with a small ring gear attached. This then engages with a lightweight motorcycle starter on a frame. I have the whole package ready to fit, it's really nicely done. What it won't do is reverse your car up a steep driveway, it's an MSA requirement level mechanism (or, I guess IVA).
The MSA finally clarified the reverse situation, so I removed the whole assembly at the start of the season, having spent a long time installing it. Ho Hum.

dans car is a mk and its in the tunnel all fits very well i will get him to send me some pics

chunky2772 - 9/6/10 at 07:55 PM

thanks thats give me an idea i wonder if i can fix two cordless drill motors to a bracket either side of my rear wheels fixed with rubber drive wheels that lower onto the tyres (it will be slow reversing if there powerfull enough)

chunky2772 - 9/6/10 at 08:11 PM

just done a search carnt find anything! im either searching in the wrong section or i need some specs. (imp paul! pics would be nice if you can get some mate to see how this is done thanks from mick)

Dangle_kt - 9/6/10 at 08:17 PM

use the google search, not the locost one - the inbuilt one can be a little picky about terms used.

go to google and type whatever you are looking for in the box but just follow it with

xxx site:www.locostbuilders.co.uk

where XXX = whatever words you want to search for.

Look in my archive, plenty of info there

chunky2772 - 9/6/10 at 08:21 PM

thanks!

Chunky have a look at this

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=113340

I have currently got cars with 1 with lecky reverse and 1 with quaiffe.
Best to answer what you want it to do ie function as normal reverse or just go back oin the flat as prev referred to above.

40inches - 9/6/10 at 08:34 PM

This is the starter you need.

chunky2772 - 9/6/10 at 08:39 PM

davg, just looked at those pics i just havent got the room at the rear of the diff to do that im using an mx5 diff in my car so ive only got room at the front of the tunnel where the engine goes it looks a good simple idea though. i will have to give it some thought overnight the wifes giving me an ear bashing cos ive be on this fourum all night (carnt wait to get the car done so i can escape ha ha.)

Davg - 9/6/10 at 08:45 PM

Chunky, 'ear bashing' you just need to get used to it tell her you'll buy her a new pair of shoes or ?

(might have a quaiffe box up for grabs if any interest, not that cheap though!)
cheers D
