i took the car out tonight for a blast, when i got back i turned it off and it ran on for a couple of seconds. any ideas why? ( it was a good thrash

carboned up, running a little too hot, ignition timing out slightly
was the fan running?
yep, the fan was running. i've got light that comes on with the fan.
Turn off like an MGB, Foot on clutch, foot on brake, transmission in first gear, turn off key, lift foot off clutch. Had to do it every time I got the engine hot in traffic.
Could the idle be too high? throttle cable not returning fully after being held open?
Could be either a back feed from the electrics, or the combustion temperatures are too high.
I would say it was due to overheating possibly caused by weak mixture during your blat. Have you checked your AFR or had a good dyno session?
Back feed through the fan or dieseling.

Did it cough and splutter to a halt, or die when the fan stopped?
As above, its either the engine running on due to the fan running. To combat this IIRC you need to put a diode in the supply line to the fan.

The engine is running on due to some carbon build up inside the cylinders, usually some protruding head gasket, carbon build up on spark plugs or
valves. To overcome this, the easiest option is to run some fuel additive in you're next tank of fuel.
Either way, its not the end of the world. Just a little annoying.

Didn't the Mk2 Escorts have a foofoo valve to discharge the manifold pressure when you turned off the ignition to prevent this happening?
