I needs a short box for my 4x4 project and have a type 9 lying on the floor...
This is for anyone who has taken one to bits.
What can I find behind the back cover? It s the bit with the gearstick and splined out put.
I know 5th gear is tacked onto the back of the case but is the output shaft one piece or do I have a chance of moving the splined output shaft back
onto the back of the case?
Any pics of one in bits would be nice.
Steve
Everything is solid behind the cover. The 5th gear workings are all close to the main case.
The only thing thats part way along is the speedo drive, which if not needed will easily knock off the shaft. Along with the centering spring for the
selector shafts.
If you have a spare box just undo the 6/8 big bolts holding the tail housing on and pull it off (empty the oil first!) Its comes off easily, might
need a little tap for encouragement.
I believe mallocks used to run a shortened Ali rear section. May be worth looking on there / speaking to procomp to see if i'm making this up.
there was a cut away diagram posted on here a few days back. can't find it now...
found it
might give some idea what to expect

Back in the 1970s/80s Mallocks/Clubman's cars used to use a much shortened version of the Lotus Elan box --- really much the same as the Type 9
without the 5th speed and the gear lever mounted straight on the top of the gearbox no remote. It was based on the early 2000e 3 rail casing with
the 105e Anglia gear lever.

What about an MT75 box, they are cheap as chips if not free.
I'm sure they are shorter that the type 9 and you can shorten the gear stick linkage.
Only an idea.
MT75 would be fine but i cant find one!
