silencer recommendation
David H - 16/7/10 at 03:58 AM

I'm looking for recommendations for a silencer for a 4AGE powered Locost. I'm using an exhaust header from Raw Engineering that has a 2" outlet. The 4AGE exhaust is on the left side.

I'd prefer polished stainless, and would like all the ancilliary hardware as well... mounting bracket and 90deg outlet.

Thanks!

David

I got one from 907 on here.

I told him what I wanted, gave him some measurements and a few pictures with some rough paintshop scribbling on it.

The can fitted perfectly and looks ace. Would recommend him to anybody looking for a can.

Mines from 907 (paul) top quality.

I got a can from paul too http://www.paulgooderham.co.uk/exhaustcans.html

The turn around was very quick, and the can is a quality piece of fabrication and fitted on straight away to my old manifold and mounts and looks great, all made from a 1:1 drawing i sent him and mail order to me house.

My only comment further than this is that it was louder than i was expecting, with a number of others saying they thought the car was loud for the size of the silencer. This might be due to nature of the engine in question and i don't know what others thoughts on this is (speed8, bob?) but if your trying to get serious on noise (i would like to be able to do 95db limit days) that might be something to investgate.

As soon as i get chance im going to phone paul and see what he says about it and try and get some information from wunoff as to what they put in there, which are apparently very quiet for what they are.

Dan, i will be interested in what paul or anyone else has to comment on the noise too. My can is certainly louder than the one from MK engineering which passed SVA, i believe the MK can originated from tube engineering in Nottingham.

My 907 can on a 2L blacktop zetec measured 94Db once it had fluffed out, beforehand it was 106Db!!!

For comparison my intake is 97Db. Funnily the rolling road operator thought that the can might be too restrictive, but i'm waiting for more funds to get a 6" can.

ATB Dan.

for repacking or packing a silencer for the first time there is stuff called accustafill. You can get it from the bay.
I used it on mine. I think i could of packed it more but it works well, is clean to handle and last forever.
It swells when heated so it fills strange shapes. Its no worse than before but i also think i could get it better.

Tried to reply yesterday but my connection was pants.
I haven't had a chance to drive mine in anger yet as I'm waiting on a modified column and bearing for my quick release but hopefully that'll be sorted in the next couple of weeks.
Elvington isn't far from me so I'll try and drive up sometime and see how loud it is. I think a lot of my noise is induction noise though so I'm looking into an airbox of some sort to try and reduce it a little bit.
