Been trying to work out where to fit my oil cooler. I've mounted the radiator in position and have a nice gap behind so i've left as much
room as possible. Will it get enough cool air? I've got vented 'wings' on the car so the air has a way in and out. Would it be worth
making a scoop under the car to channel some air towards the oil cooler?
First impression is maybe a bit obvious but won't the oil cooler be getting hot air from the rad? It might be better mounted lower down.
You could put a little piece of ali under the radiator to "funnel" cool air through the nosecone to the oil cooler. Then it'd work as long as there was a big enough gap between the bottom of the rad and the nosecone.
the oil cooler is mounted as low as it can(its on the chassis). I was working on the assumption that if I can't have it directly behind the rad
the bigger the gap the better to allow air to flow and not cause a pocket, I was thinking about an duct in the side of the nose cone on the side
pointing towards it and a small scoop underneath.
The rad is bigger than it looks and at 70mm deep fills my nose cone with 15mm gap all the way round, I've gone for a larger oil cooler too
which is about 45ish mm thick.
I'm hoping air should flow through there with the vented side panels(wings) promoting airflow through the engine bay. When I took the m3 apart
the oil cooler wasn't directly in the airflow and had a small duct directing air towards it.
Or what about this, the radiator sits roughly where the brown tape is, would a scoop/duct be useful where the brown tape is near the bottom of the
nose cone? Would I get enough air going through it? The air would be going behind the radiator then.....
Why not mount it parallel to the centre line of the car, or at an angle, near to the side exits?
where abouts do you mean? In the top of the nose cone?
i would put it in nose under rad with its own air scoop , if youve got room , are you using original cooler ,they re quite wide,
I think the low scoop should work fine. Atleast if you duct the cooler in so it really gets it's cool air. I'd go for it.
where i mean to put it is between front of chasis and rad at the bottom but have it flat with a scoop in bottom of nose so it gets its own air from underneath , you might have to modify nose a bit to make it look right,

i would not even bother with a scoop and just put it in front of the rad.

I would say that were you have the cooler will be just fine, (IMHO), the Range Rover 2.5 Diesel has it's oil cooler within the rad, I know as I have a RR 2.5 D rad cooling my V6. The oil doesn't want to be too cold anyway, and to ensure that this doesn't happen you should have a thermostatic valve in the cooler pipe work. Cheers Ray
another sugestion bit drastic but, can you modify rad by taking of the flat plates on sides moving rad as far as pos to one side and puting cooler at side of rad even if you have to get new cooler , the reason i am persisting with this is because i have had problems getting the cooling right on my bm 3.0,
I'll try it where it is with a duct, thats why I went for such a large rad so i'm confident it should work.
Is yours a water temp problem or oil temp?
I can't move the rad to the side as I could only gain about 30mm tops on one side.

mine was mainly water cooling probs , got it sorted now, seems like air flow in the right place is the key, i used original oil cooler and a london taxi radiator, one thing i have done is take the air intake and filter right into the nose to make sure it is getting cold air in not overheated expanded air from under the bonnet, my theory being cold air = more air = bigger bang. only my theory,,,
Id say its just fine where it is, once moving it will get air movement.
If you can, mount a shallow, rectangular scoop under the nose cone.
