
Ive been wiring up my acewell the last couple of days, and i realised the BMW temp sensor isnt the right resistance to work with the dash. luckily the
dash came with its own sensor. But wheres the best place to put it?
In the rad? in the pipework before or after the rad? somewhere in the block?
and hows best to mount it?

In the flow from the engine to the radiator.
This will give you an accurate ENGINE coolant temp, rather than any ambient influenced temperatures.
Is the bmw OE sensor 1/8npt? The pinto one was, I specced the acewell with that and just screwed it into the head in the stock location.
Thought I'd ask as loads of std ones are this size.
Acewell do these sizes :
M10 x 1mm
NPT 1/8
M12 x 1.5mm
M14 x 1.25mm
M14 x 1.5mm
Chances are one will fit in the stock location, keeps things nice and neat.

IM not sure, the bit you can see is quite a bit larger, but this is for the electrical plug to go on, it could be that the actual threaded part is the
same size now you mention it, will check that tomorrow.
If not how could i mount it in either the alloy pipes or the silicone hose?
I googled bmw coolant temp sensor thread last night and some of the M12 ones and M14 ones that came up were directly replaceable by the acewell ones I
listed above.
If for some reason it's not a compatible sizeyou could get one of these to fit it into the hose:

For a representative reading it has to go either between the head outlet and the thermostat or in the by-pass circuit.

Actually putting a temperature sensor in the top hose won't, to work properly the sensor has to be fitted before the thermostat or in the by-pass circuit.
