Transverse Gearbox.
Chris Ridgers - 15/8/10 at 12:53 PM

I have a new project that i'm starting i've built 2kit car before, but lack a lot of knowledge when it comes to engines and gearboxes as there always already been mount in the chassis when i brought a kit.

My new Project will be running a Opel Gt 2.0l turbo engine. Which in the standard car is mount in the front and longitudinal. The Project will have the engine sitting in the rear and Transverse. So of course will need a Transverse Gearbox? My problem lies with not know which one will fit onto my engine, and where to source them from. I've sent the last week searching and have gotten even more confused when getting deeper into the mechanics of it as i have very little knowledge and experience.

If any one is able to simple this for me, the workings of it and also knows a good source for a gearbox or even what it is i am looking for would be much help. Thanks

So as a manual Gt it was fitted with a Aisin Ar-5 gearbox and these where fitted to..

Applications:

2004 to 2008– GMC Canyon
2006– Pontiac Solstice
2007– Saturn Sky
2007– Hummer H3

That's a tough one - there's loads of tranverse engine/gearbox packages to choose from but I think you will need a transaxle to get the mid mounted longitudinal engine connected to the rear wheels. Maybe Porsche or possibly Renault? Sounds expensive to me

Given the interchangeability of many products within any one particular car company, I should think there is a very good chance that it would fit a Vauxhall Vectra etc gearbox.

Have you tried googling the actual model number of the engine?

Thanks for your replys, didn't think I needed a transaxle as the engine will sit over the rear wheels. Part just struggling with finding a dealer of new transverse gearboxes. From what i found out i thought i'd be able to mate a F25 or F28 vauxhall gearbox without much problems? but like i said this is all new to me.

Do you think you have chosen the ideal project? Not wanting to dampen anybodys enthusiasm but am a bit worried that you are going to have a lot of issues to overcome.

Maybe starting with the engine alone is not the best possible place? Is there not a donor which already has what you want, for instance, tranverse engine AND gearbox, 2L turbo first thought would be VAG A3, Golf etc

Its okay, managed to find the info after another 2hours of searching. I can use the Chev Colbalt gearbox F35 and linkage.

Thanks for your help.

Audi box is the one to go for IMHO, they can soak up the HP, you can get LSD's and a new one can be had cheaply, old ones start at £50 so you can use as a build mule, if its rubbish buy something better.

Also IMHO, I would look to buy a v6 passat or similar and use the complete engine and drive train, or use a 4 pot turbo audi engine.

The engine code of the GT engine is Z20NHH. This engine is based on the L850 GM full aluminium ecotec engines like the Z22SE, Z22YH und Z20NET. Furthermore the engine is identical to the A20NHT motor found in the Insignia. So you have a lot of gearboxes to chose from, not only from Vauxhall, but for example also from Saab.
