Im really starting to enjoy learning about engines and getting a bit better as I go. I'm putting a new head on a K series Pheonix after she
decided to loose the fan belt pulley, loosen the crank sprocket and ditch the timing belt whilst driving
Ive got the head off, sourcing a replacement but now I'm reading about refitting and timing, I'm thinking it may be sensible to have some
supervision/help as it seems a small mistake can put me bak in exactly the same position (16 bent valves)
Do we have any experts who fancy mentoring.?
I'd never claim (in public anyway) to be an expert but I've probably got the info you need. Joe's got my number.

OK, first question to make sure that doesn't happen... Did you turn the crank to the timing mark before taking the head off? Whatever you do,
DON'T turn the crank once the heads off.

Hi, as above do not turn the crank with the head off as the liners can move and the mains can fall off meaning a total engine strip.

its not difficult ,as others have said ,do not turn crank without headbolts in,use some thin tubing to make sleeves the thickness of the head and bolt together if you need to move it ,if you are not sure dont do it i will come and give you a lift call me in accrington 01254382963

If it's not at the timing mark there's no panic. Don't try getting it turned untill the head is back on. Then line it up before the
cams go in. Block wise just clean it up. Put as smear of grease around the pistons to stop the debris getting down the gap to the rings (you can wipe
it off later) and clean the surface; Cleanliness is better than godliness with head-gaskets. Clean the bolts and if you're following the
instructions for measuring (although I've yet to find K-series bolts that needed changing) DON'T drop them down the holes, lower them in.
Have you got a new head? If not, why dont you bring your old one down and we'll check it over and see what needs doing to reuse it?

Typical of me(Mr I can work things out) I took the head off and then decided to read some info that said 3 things.
1) Contrary to popular belief, head bolts are actually useable up to 5 times and this comes from Rover themselves.
2) How to hang the bolts, spray with WD40 and allow to drip dry off the threads.
However...
3) Keep the head bolts numbered too replace in the same holes. Ermmmmm Ididnt.
Is number 3 that crucial too.?
I've never bothered with 3 but then never knew it anyway. Lost count of the number I've done but never had one come back.

Ohhh there may be another twist to this. Ive googled the number stamped in my bent valve head and it seems to be the same as this one.
Head link
lOOKS LIKE IT HAS BIGGER VALVES THAN THE NORMAL 1.8K (sorry caps lock slipped) 31mm inlet and 27mm exhaust. If this is right I may have to get the
valves replaced and head done. The car went pretty fast and was told it made 160bhp although I cant verify it at the mo.

I'm off to measure my valves.
