Advice please on changing 1st gear ratio type 9
AdrianH - 10/9/10 at 07:36 PM

I believe it is well known that the 1st gear on the type 9 means you run out of revs very quick on mine top revs at 28 mph, with a change to 2.98 that would be 35 mph.

Cheapest I have seen the gear set is £200 plus VAT.

How many have done the gear change themselves and is it worth the money in drive-ability? The car is not a racer but the 1st to 2nd does seem one hell of a drop.

And VAT will go up at end of year?

Putting a BGH geartech high first box in my car was one of the best mods I have made

Was it a difficult thing to do ? Do you have to strip the box all the way down to do this and did you replace other parts while at it?

Might have read you answer wrong did you get a complete box?

You give them the gearbox and they give you a BGH Gearbox.... oh but theres some money involved at some point too

Although i think they sell gearboxs without giving them one too....

I am more trying to find anyone that has fitted the new gears themselves to their old box. I am a cheapskate and would rather save the £300 if I can do it at home. Just concerned how much work it is.

I have a spare type 9!

Still considering this mod myself but am scared of ripping a box apart.
If you strip the box to fit the gearset how much more would you replace and how much would that all cost.
I compramissed and fitted the V6 box, better but still a big jump, 2.98 I think is still low for a 7, 2.7 ideal for road.
As for how much work it is, I would strip your type9 before buying the gearset, that way you will have a good idea of the work involved before parting with the hard earned

By the time you add up all the costs of gear kits, bearings, seals , synchro rings etc (which I would have only paid trade prices on) I didn't think it was worth rebuilding the box myself .
