Hi - a good day today getting the exhaust run sorted as well as steering column.....and then, just before leaving, had another look at the leak from the gearbox...(bad idea to do that at the end of a good day)

Noticed that there is some sort of glue (looks like araldite) on the casing just below one of the bolts...my father in law thinks that it is a crack that has previously been (attempted to be) repaired.

So, it looks like I am dealing with a cracked casing. Its the diff half of the box. (Not the engine end) I have not been able to inspect it properly yet, but if worst fears are confirmed and it is a crack, how should I resolve the little f'er?

Things I have managed to read online so far are:

-Weld
-Gasget weld / glue or similar
-Replace whole thing / replace that part of the casing

Each of these so I read require taking it apart to be able clean properly and de-grease.

Cost is a major factor for me and it is a bit of a ball ache to get the box in and out -either way I should probably get it sorted now!

I would swap box, its not going to get better and if glue didnt work the first time its not going to the second. Its not what you want to hear but you know its best...

Get another identical box and sell that one on as spare repairs, someone with a shagged gearbox but decent case will buy it and off set the cost.
We have a local engineering shop who do the tricky welds on cast for us with great success- steering arms etc so prob worth finding your local equivalent and getting a guesstimate, unless someone on here can help.

Have a chat with a local gearbox specialist... preferably one that does alloy castings for type 9's.. they'll have the original castings lying around probably.

A picture of exactly what part is , (maybe), cracked would be really good. If it where the alloy extension fits to the cast iron section then you may be able to repair it with JB Weld, I have had some success with this product on several items. But as I said without a picture its all guess work. Cheers Ray

Welding cast is difficult and requires heating the cast bit very hot.
Brazing would require heat and a very clean crack so you would have to strip and clean.
There are some crack filling products but again clean it first.
For the sake of £50 to £75 I would replace it.
If you realy have to repair what you have then Rally Design have a cast ally bare box for £147 + VAT

Okeydokie- great stuff - thanks for the ideas. I will get into the gearbox and get a pic once I can find a pair of hands to help get the box out. Probably look out for a wanted post on here soon!
