ron champion chassis

hi ! im just about to start a build but could just do with a bit of advice first. i have a ron champion chassis and i want to put a new 2 litre zetec in it with a type 9 gearbox . i would have preffered the mt75 because it would give better acceleration but i don t think it would fit . i don t really want to start messing about with the chassis .i am not bothered about a high top speed but would rather have faster accelleration. i intend using the locost on the road with the occasional track .i would appreciate any advice on the type of set up i need without breaking the bank.

hello and welcome to the mad house

the type 9 box will give you more options in the long run (loads of aftermarket gear sets avalible)
and you can always get a lower geared rear axle to sort out the acceleration

what axle have you got just now ?

cheers everybody ! i have a mk2 cortina rear axle. so would a type 9 gearbox just slot in without any major adjustments ?

The type 9 has closer ratios than a MT75, if you want acceleration use a 3.9 diff

1st on the Mt75 is to low anyway.

You may need to adjust the chassis around the starter but you wont know untill you get it in there.

The Zetec is quite a tall engine for a Ron chassis. If I were you I'd add an inch to the overall height if going that route. If you don't and manage to get it to fit without unsightly bulges, please let me know how!!

I have been looking at engine options recently and Actually found the zetec to be quite small for a car engine.
That said most engines are tall ina book chassis.

I am going to fit taller body work, then you have no bulges.

+1

definitely needs an inch adding to the top rail it will then sit under a standard bonnet. Most sevenesque kits are an inch taller than the book chasis.

As said previously change the diff to get the ratio needed

Aries formerly Stuart Taylor do low line body work, you'll struggle to get a zetec in without a bulge.

MK do the same height bodywork but add 1" to the chassis.

MAC do the same (i think - someone else will confirm)

Luego do bodywork with an extra inch height.

(this is all from my conversations about 5 years ago so it may have changed).

Therefore Luego bodywork may help you.

The GTS Panther bodywork is specifically designed for the taller twin cam engines, nose bonnet and scuttle are taller to allow room for the engine.
