Volvo Turbo fitted :)
Rallye_Mark - 5/12/10 at 09:22 PM

Well managed to get into the garage with my DSLR today and took a few pictures of the chassis with the engine trial fitted, waiting on the V8 Land Rover mounts to arrive but you get the general idea of the head scratching and fun ahead

Cheers Mark

Don't mean to alarm you but it would appear someone's crashed a boat into your garage!

marcjagman - 5/12/10 at 09:31 PM

What gearboix are you using? was it hard to fit?

Rallye_Mark - 5/12/10 at 09:36 PM

Gearbox is the standard Volvo M46, its a 4 speed manual with a 5th gear overdrive. Only just fits into the standard chassis.

Yeah thats my RIB, quite a monster, running a Johnson VRO 150hp V6 off the back, good for about 50-60knots

interestedparty - 5/12/10 at 09:55 PM

Are you going to be able to get the steering down through there after all the exhaust and turbo stuff is mounted?

matt_gsxr - 5/12/10 at 09:58 PM

Nice work, I had those tyres, and they are tricky on the road (plenty of tramlining).

does the turbo clear the top chassis rail with the standard exhaust manifold.

marcjagman - 5/12/10 at 09:59 PM

Is it out of a 740 then?

Humbug - 5/12/10 at 10:04 PM

Looks like a good turning circle

Rallye_Mark - 5/12/10 at 10:12 PM

Nope turbo wont fit with the standard manifold, would be touching the chassis rail so making my own manifold to position it above the chassis rail, howver doing research into the removal of internal wastegates and converting to external as it will make the install a little easier as I am constrained by its location.

Should have enough room for everything once i get it mounted.

Yeah its a B230ET from a Volvo 740 Turbo, 2.3litre 8v with 182hp at 5800rpm and 260Nm at 3400rpm. Most powerful engine in the range and very tunable...

Your shocks look a little on the hard side to me

now that is some mega right hand lock!

James - 6/12/10 at 02:20 PM

Looking good mate.

Are you missing the 2 chassis rails that re-inforce the engine bay? Can't see that well but if they don't fit it would be worth looking into alternatives- they make a massive difference to chassis lozenging!

Cheers,
James

Rallye_Mark - 6/12/10 at 04:19 PM

Had to remove it initially, will be putting extra ones in once the engine is fitted and mounted so I know how much room I have to play with.

Rallye_Mark - 6/3/11 at 03:36 PM

Well a little update, I've mounted the engine but not 100% happy about its location so I'm going to raise it a little higher to give me some more ground clearance.

I've also managed to buy some GRP bucket seats, some 4 point harnesses (Only to pass the IVA test then these will be replaced with 6 Point aircraft buckle style. Got them from the same guy at a bargain of £200 including postage which was ace Picture of the seats below:-

Also won an eBay item from a guy quite close to me, which is a nice new nose cone built by himself, won it for £51 which is nice and had a good chat, so hopefully buy some things from him in future, pictures below.

And last but not least my flanges arrived from RSII, however I didn't realise that the T3 flange was a split style, but think it might not seal properly but will be handy to have if I uprate my turbo at a later date. The flange is a nice bit of kit and very happy with the quality of it, both inlcuding postage was $111.88, which is about £69 at the minute. (all the money bits are for a record for myself in the future lol) Picture below:-

Now I'm going to leave building an equal length manifold for the moment, it will take up too much important room under my very small and packed bonnet. So instead of that and also instead of a log, I will try and make a Splog (Split LOG) manifold that flows better than a normal log and still allows fast spooling of the turbo. The splog will hopefully look something like the one below, but with the turbo Top Mounted instead of bottom mounted.

Cheers Mark

Bought some Welding Elbows today, hopefully at the weekend I'll get a chance to maybe mock it up. Here are some pics...

Cheers Mark.
