Welch plugs - galvanised or brass
Ivan - 10/12/10 at 10:02 AM

What welch plug should I use in CI block - Galvanised - cheap and possibly good enough if well made or Brass which are expensive but most probably longer lasting.

I used Galvanised last time and they lasted 20+ years but they where most probably manufactured in the USA - who knows what one will get now and the nuisance of failure will far out-way cost difference, but then who knows if Brass will last longer.

I suspect brass is too soft and not sprigy enough? or have I missed something (never seen them)
Steel should be fine, if a decent antifreeze is used corrosion shouldn't happen.

Stainless Welsh Plugs are also available - they are used a lot in diesel engines because they suffer worst from corrosion.

A modern OAT long life coolant will give all the corrosion protection required.

20 years back methanol and methanol glycol blend antifreezes were still i use these were corrosive and should have drained and replaced with corrosion inhibitor every spring but often this was neglected.
