Starter Motor/ Flywheel Reverse
TIMHICKS1983 - 6/1/11 at 05:35 PM

I have fitted a starter motor and flywheel to my final drive but the starter doesn't have the power to reverse the car up a small incline.

The flywheel is bolted to my own designed and made final drive which consists of drive flanges, made by myself and sprocket carrier for the chain drive. The car is powered by a zx10 engine.

Are there special motors to do this which have more torque? I'm not really fused about reverse but would be nice in awkward situations

What is the motor you have off?

I should think JAGUAR XJS 5.3 V12 STARTER MOTOR on eBay (end time 05-Feb-11 13:53:53 GMT) would be more powerful than the one you have

Hi have a Saab 9000 starter which pushs my Saab up a steepish hill with no worries.

I think the problem is I can only stick the reverse motor on the final drive so that the ratio is 1:1. In a car engine the gearbox gears it down etc.

I have a 40amp battery where the Saab has a 70. Not sure if the bigger battery would help enough to move the car

Thanks for your reply

if its on a 1:1 ratio, the problem is definitely there. think about the ratio used to start an engine for example, the starters gear is tiny, and the flywheel is huge. if you can change the ratio, that should sort the problem. i don't think a bigger battery will make any difference.

Oh the starter and flywheel are as standard ring sizes, I meant the starter turns the flywheel which is on the final drive.

There for one turn of the fly wheel equals one turn of the wheels

ah, i see. well, normally i think people put these things on the input flange to a diff, which means the diff changes the ratio again. any photos of the set up?
looking at your profile, is it a BEC smart car you're making?
