What's the easiest way to remove that 'rubber' donut thing? The nuts holding mine on seem b****y tight!

Yes they are very tight, with a locking compound too.

Long breaker bar, and an appropriate lever to stop the flange turning.

If you think the nuts are tight the studs are even tighter.
