XE Clutches
scootz - 18/1/11 at 03:08 PM

Took my engine out to paint it and was a bit surprised at how small the clutch is.
Is this standard for a 2.0XE???

ooh, no that looks a bit special to me!
mine (although a later ecotec) the clutch is a lot bigger. mine uses a sierra plate, i forget what size.
don't think i got pictures of mine, but thats not standard i don't think

this is a bit more like it

Cheers Blake... the guy I bought the car from rattled through the spec when we met, but it was never written down. I then promptly forgot!

I've tried getting back in touch with him to find out more, but he's gone quiet!

I remember him saying he had a mate who worked for Alcon and that he had supplied the brakes and some other 'stuff'... maybe thats where the clutch is from.

some one has spent MEGA money on that clutch

twin plate 7 and a half inch by the look of it, prob abot £700-£1000 worth of clutch

Yum Yum

Special clutch and quite a tasty bit of gear luck you.

Should be some markings on it somewhere I would imagine.

scootz - 18/1/11 at 05:23 PM

Oooh... cool!

Cheers guys - I'll try and find some markings on it tomorrow.

And any clues what this is on the sump?

omega 24 v6 - 19/1/11 at 12:25 PM

Yep that'll be the old oil level switch to let you know when to top it up. ( mainly for women as men do check oil regularly )
Fozzie and Clairetoo excepted of course cause they are special.

Thanks!

you're a jammy sod!!!

That is an expensive clutch!!

We've just paid £600 for something similar in the kadett c turbo, plus 120 quid for the billet flywheel!

Thats the Oil level sensor
and that Clutch is Big money

Don't take this the wrong way but There seems to be an awful lot of sealant on the mating flange of the sump and it would be worth removing the sump and making sure none of the sealant has found its way into the Bottom of the sump
*If* it clogs the oil strainer or gets into the oil pump it won't have a happy ending
I stripped a Zetec engine once which was similar and the Gasket sealant had blocked half of the oil strainer

Cheers. I was thinking that I might as well change the oil-pump whilst the engine is out, so will see if there is any gunk inside!

perksy - 21/1/11 at 11:39 PM

Funny enough just ordered an oil pump from Autovaux for an XE engine i've got here for local westy owner

Have the data/tolerances here for the oil pump if you need it, but *if* its scored Badly internally there ain't much you can do

Any real-world advantage to getting the uprated SBD one... is it an extra £150 well spent!?

perksy - 22/1/11 at 01:18 PM

Depends what its going to be used for to be honest

Standard one is fine for fast road use but if your going to drive the nads off it regularly on Track days etc it might be a good insurance policy

What can happen is that the gears in the standard oil pump can break up given enough abuse, although i've seen a few XE's given plenty of abuse on the standard ones

Also the standard Timing Disc on the Crank can also Crack up with contiued abuse and alot of competition XE's use an external timing disc and sensor

Trouble is with these things you can keep going and going and spend shed loads if you want to
