Has anyone on here built a BEC using a v twin from a bike, i have been looking on ebay and they look cheep, what are the good pionts and bad pionts???

There's a guy on the BKCC (my local club) running an Aries Locoblade with an Aprilia RSV Mille in it, can't wait to hear it

STM (now Aries) also did a SP1 based car

Just think of the noise !

after owning a tl1000r and only bought it for the sound i was thinking would it make a good engine for a kit as bike it did not like round town riding as it was not good low down in the rev range what i would like to know is why is it mostly 4 pot bike engines use in kits when v twins are as cheep as chips??? and is it legal to use two engins in one kit???

That's pretty much the same for most V twins, although they have plenty of torque you get a lot of chain snatch if you try to make it pull hard at too low an engine speed due to the uneven and infrequent torque pulses compared to a 4 cylinder.

Perfectly legal to use two engines AFAIK, Tiger has (had?) a twin engine kit and Russ's Furore F1 car uses two bike engines.

Twins belong in bikes....

catman - 20/1/11 at 07:49 PM

i race with a guy who has a v twin powered kit car and not only does it sound great but he can keep up with a westie V8!

Aprilia RSV is dry sumped as standard too!

But gets horribly expensive once you start trying to collect all the parts to make the engine run (I know from bitter experience!).

yep, correct!

they make good power though, and the ecu is "only" the same cost as a dry sump kit needed on most other motors.

The torque spread of the mille is incredible.

I paid £1000 for 2 sub 4000 mile 1 year old engines about 3 years ago, complete with all wiring and other bits like exhuasts etc. no ecu's but stock ones no good anyway really.

skodaman - 20/1/11 at 09:37 PM

Go on Flak tell us how much your engine cost. We'll assume you've knocked a zero off what you tell us just in case your missus sees it.

marcjagman - 20/1/11 at 09:40 PM

Check this site out http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/ you will find most V twins give reasonable torque but crap BHP in standard form.

BenB - 20/1/11 at 10:03 PM

Of course best option is to get two V twins and put them together to make a V4

franky - 20/1/11 at 10:04 PM

a modern v-twin(ie 1200ish cc) makes about the same bhp as a IL4 from 18months ago(160 ish at the wheel) and more torque everywhere.

Say a ducati/morini 1200cc twin should be a better engine than any but the most recent IL4's and better on the road than the new IL4's due to the bottom end grunt.

Richard Quinn - 20/1/11 at 10:12 PM

Having done it, I can't understand some of the comments on here. They are relatively cheap but you'll have to be prepared to do some machining / fabrication of some of your own parts as they are not available off the shelf. I think you would struggle with a 90 degree v twin in a standard type chassis, the V990 is a 60 degree twin and is quite tight.
They will run fine on the standard ecu with a power commander and it's fine to drive around town. The earlier ecu comes with two maps installed as they were restricted to 120 odd bhp from the factory. Cutting a ground within the loom switches to a secondary derestricted map. Power delivery is fine from low down in the rev range and, as it doesn't have the same relatively narrow "power band" as an IL4, it is quite forgiving and tolerant of not being kept on the boil.
As mentioned before, it is dry sumped as standard. You can also fit the 57mm throttle bodies off the later factory model together with a set of Kent cams. There are also shower-type secondary injector kits available as well as a Rotrex supercharger kit for those with deeper pockets.

Erm, a lot. Just under £4k and it doesnt make 'that' much power, 140bhp and 145lbft from a 2.1 litre twin revving to 6500rpm...

hootsno1 - 21/1/11 at 11:59 AM

thanks for all you in put but it would sound nice this will be my first build so i was looking at all my options there is so much to choose from bec cec or GAS TURBINE found one on youtube how cool???

Mr Whippy - 21/1/11 at 12:38 PM

my current bike is a Yamaha V twin Virago, soooo much torque it's just brill and their sound is so distinctive, stupidly simple engine too, no more complex than an old 2 CV engine

I love them

Way to go, this will be a great bike...paint it ford purple...Like mine

I'm now moving away from cars to do bikes as they are just so easy to do in comparison and are so much fun to ride
