nickw2000 - 13/3/11 at 07:58 PM

going to change the gearbox oil.

think its a type 9 gear box on a pinto 2.0 engine.

what oil to replace with?

also any tips of draining and refilling that will make the job easier?

what side is the draining plug and level check?

thanks

Years ago I bought a draper oil suction pump with a length of plastic pipe on it, and makes changing gearbox/diff fluid changing very easy. Had to change auto fluid on our Landcruiser recently and would have been a real pain trying to get 4ltrs of trans fluid down the dipstick tube without the pump. Clean it out after and it'll last for years..

Most important thing is don't use a GL5 gear oil
Original spec was EP80 GL4
Any GL4 synthetic or semi-synthetic gear oil 75w/90

Oil filler is on the nearside and difficult to get to I drilles a hoe in the side of the bulk head in line with the filler pug makes it a lot easier

I know most GL5 oils attack yellow metal. Unless it specifically says otherwise................
why take the risk? use the factory spec oil is always the best idea. And I know shops will usually tell you it isn't a problem. Well, not theirs anyway!

If you read the original post the gearbox in question is a Ford type 9, that is why you don't use a GL5 oil

I know, and i Did. I just wondered why not in the Type 9.

At least one of the gearbox restoring companies recommends Comma semi-synthetic SX75W-90 (GL4). Just under £5 a litre in the local Wilco shop.

Which is what I put in my Type 9 last Saturday... odd stuff - I expected something the usual green/brown oil colour, and out came clear fluid! Just as smelly as the old stuff though.
