Hello, this is my first post here, I was recommended to this site by another member who has just done a V6 cosworth transplant.

I brought last year a Robin Hood 2B which was suppose to be a runner, since its been off the road we have replaced the gear box along with other bits. The car has a Zetec 2L engine which we had to cut up the alternator bracket to make things fit correctly, at the same time we had to cut out the tension pulley. The biggest problem though is that I want to use a much smaller belt but cant due to the water pump needs to be spun in the opposite direction to what it does now.

My question is, does anyone know what is the best solution to the water pump? I have read that Escort and Fiesta water pumps will work but looking at pictures of them, they look completely different and I don't know if I can just use the blades from the other water pumps or the whole thing.

Can anyone help?

Hello and welcome to the mad house.


All you need to do is fit an idler above the waterpump
on the exhaust side of the engine.run the ribbed side around the
idler the the back of the belt around the waterpump,
then round the crank and alternator.
Job done,It's compact and easy to do.
Far better than faffing about changing the impeller on the pump.

It also depends if its a black or silvertop as to weather the escort pump will fit on.

we fitted a pulley on the top right of the engine, above the water pump, then ran the belt round it to reverse the water pump. It works fine, the pulley came of the original zetec, my dad (norfolkluego) may even have a spare somewhere.

You can also buy kits from raceline, Raw, retro ford etc that will (for a price) solve the problem.

Hello and welcome, take a look in my archive for pics of a similar idler on a blacktop.

I used a VW beetle alternator pulley, which I machined out to take 2 bearings with a 3mm spacer between them.

Other option is to fit a Escort zetec water pump which runs in the opposite direction to a Mondeo. get a ribbed pulley from Ford and run a waterpump-crank pulley-alternator belt using the alternator to tension. Worth getting a decent alternator mounting, I think I got mine from Spyder cars.

Better off just fabbing a bracket for the idler then keep all the components OEM.

Hello and thank you all for the super fast reply's, me and kensprin (Well Kensprin) made a brackets (Twice) on the right hand side of the engine but if I could, I would love to discard that for the water pump idea.

I have looked at the electic pump but can not find a suitable one for my engine,

My engine is the Silver top Zetec 2L, if I could get the escort pump thatn would be great but which one??

I fitted a escort/zetec pump - don't remember that there was a choice of models - think it was about £25 at my local factors.

Thank you, I have found them for £25.90 so its got to be worth a shot.

This is my first kit car, origionally I had a Lotus and loved that go-cart feel, though I plan to buy an Exige, I also plan to get either a westfield or Caterham buT THE Robin is my practice car, it was used in the summer but was always falling to bits, me and Kensprin have worked on it to try and make it better ready for the summer.

Just an update, the new water pump arrived and it fitted no problems, though now I need a new torx bolt for the bottom polley and a new lower cam pully as I damaged mine getting them off :-( oh the koys of kit cars.

Hello all, things are steadily progressing with the car engine, I have started it up yesterday and all is well apart from the water pump pulley.



I am looking for a ribbed pulley from an Escort or Fiesta Zetec, can anyone help?

Put a bit of string around the path, measure it and go to the motor factors and they should be able to you out, you may have to order it but you can get most sizes, quite often the part number incorporates the length in mm, think I used the gates website to find the part number I needed and just rung the factors up.

A quick look would suggest that the first number of the part id the number of V's before the PK and the numbers after the PK is the length.

I have got a ribbed waterpump pulley from an escort,
if you still need one.
It cost me a fiver at the breakers,so does £6 posted sound any good?
