Zetec silvertop tuning
ChrisLeary - 28/3/11 at 11:56 AM

Hi all,

Does anyone have any ideas about tuning a zetec 2.0l silvertop? It's currently on GSXR600 throttle bodies running megasquirt. I'm not looking to spend £000's, just some basic work that'll release a bit more power.

It's got a standard cast exhaust manifold, will this make a difference if it's changed?

Also, what cars were the 2.0 silvertop's installed in? and which haynes manual would be best for maintenance?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Custom manifold with tuned length primarys is always going to free up horses as well as a bit of torque.

I'd do the manifold, comp raise and cams. Apparently the zetec bottom end is pretty good and all most people do is fit arp rod bolts. Then remap your ECU.

Maybe light flywheel too..

Then maybe turbo

Or supercharger

NOS might be nice

i would say DIY ported head £50 tools, skimmed to increase compression £45, cams £250-£400, exhaust manifold, ARP rod bolts £60, remap, should see region of 180bhp dependant on cams.

2 litre zetec early mondeo mk 1's

Brilliant, thanks Will.

Is it easy to port a head? I'm good with aircraft, but not on car engines. Is there anyone on here that would be willing to port and skim the head for me? or atleast help?

I'll be buying one of those manuals then, that will help a lot!

Thanks again,

Chris

whilst i accept there is skill to profesionally porting a head for best flow which you pay good money for i basically cleaned up the ports opened up the back of the valve seat and knife edged the port bridge, lots of pictures some where, i am in the process of doing a spare head at mo.

Will, is there any chance you could upload some of these pictures please?

Cheers mate,

Chris

That looks like some good work. How easy is it strip the head down?

I just hope I can source one now so that I can start work and still drive the car.

Is it true that a 1.8 silvertop head can be fitted to increase compression ratios slightly?

Cheers,

Chris

Does anyone know the answer to the above?

Thanks,
Chris

some good reading here about compression caculations, sugests 1.8 head gives 10.78 compression

zetec compression caculations

as for stripping head, need a deep valve spring compressor and bit fiddly to get valve collers off and back on and a nack to removing stem seals, once got hang of one its just x 16 including lapping valves

That's a interesting read, i had to read throught it twice to understand the equations fully. But very interesting.

So would it actually be of benefit to put 1.8 head onto the 2.0 bottom end? Like I said before, I'm good with aircraft, but not with car engines.

Cheers,

Chris

It said to increase compression by 0.8 ish weather that Is notable or not I don't know, if porting a head would expect you would get it skimed anyway. I had 0.75mm taken off my 2 litre head for same result
