V6 Duratec engines
karlak - 29/3/11 at 02:57 PM

While looking for a 2litre Duratec, I have come across loads of Duratec V6's. These are much cheaper than their 2litre equivalent.

Can these be fitted in a 7 type car ? I am guessing the reason they are cheap as they can't, but also quite heavy I guess ?

They are about the lightest V6 at 160Kg and you can mate it up to a heavy duty Type 9, Jag or Cosworth T5 box - they go nicely with throttle bodies too

I was curious of this too, here in the States the 3.0L v6 duratec is about half the cost of the 2.0L i4. I was trying to figure out why. I've seen some impressive numbers from lightly modded 2 liter lumps so I imagine the 3 liter would be even better. Anyone on here brave enough to tackle the v6 yet?

Speak to Clairtoo about them... she knows her stuff!

You need a Jag S-typre gearbox I believe to make them RWD, which is where the cost becomes an issue.

Shame they're relatively low power in stock form, for their weight though. I suspect it would take quite a bit of £££ to put much more than 220 out of the crank? Hence the lower price than performance 2 litre engines?

I had 202bhp out of the stock ST24 version and 230 bhp (and buckets of torque) can be coaxed out of them with relatively simple mods. They sound nicer than a 4 pot too

Sorry - it's the Mazda KL V6 I play around with (as used in Mx6 , Ford Probe and a few other cars...) - it's close to 80mm smaller in all directions than the Duratec lump , and somewhat lighter too at 110kgs bare.....

They are cheap as there arent any tuning bits available cheaply. Its OK if you are happy with what the standard engine gives on throttle bodies. Beyond that it gets very, very expensive.

I was thinking of some reprofiled cams to make things a bit more nippy. I had a word with one of the cam companies and they reckon they can get an extra 1mm of lift with a bit more overlap. The cost of a reprofile isn't too bad - about £200 IIRC.

I lightened my flywheel too and it really revs quickly now.

Agreed, that is about all I can afford to do ..... but then I saw a lovely supercharger from a Lexus V6 which would look really pretty sitting on top of it

You all are making it increasingly difficult to get any work done with all this talk of more cylinders, valve overlap, forced induction, cam grinding.... sheesh!
