The first time I let my car get properly warm and let the oil temp get up it flashed low oil pressure a couple of times at tickover. Tonight when
running in the garage, I gave the car a rev and the low oil pressure light came on again when the rev's dropped.
I switched the car off, then with the fuel pump turned off I turned the car over, oil pressure when straight back up. When the car was started
again the oil pressure was fine at tickover and when revving.
I've a new oil pump/sump/oil cooler/oil cooler hoses on the engine so I take it that i've got a couple of little air locks that are slowly
clearing themselves?
If I'm wrong what could be the issue? Or how can I speed up the above?
Thanks in advance.
I found my oil pressure sender needed a few heat cycles to start operating properly - it gave me a few heart flutters until it sorted itself out.
My sincere opinion is that you should have an oil pressure gauge, not just a light. My light comes on quite regularly at 12psi when the engine is hot and idling, factory lowest limit is 4.3psi when idling.
As above. Forget the light and buy a gauge. Its common for the light to flicker at low revs in kit cars etc as the tickover is very irregular compared
to a production car. Ive seen it come on after fitting a brand new race engine so always fit a gauge now to check everything is ok and put my mind at
rest.
I should have said, its got an oil pressure gauge, I've just set an alarm light to come on at 6.7psi like in the standard car. I can watch the
pressure rise and fall with revs, then every so often drop below the minimum.
All sensors are working perfectly and a pressure tester show's the same results.
Tickover is exactly as in the donor car as i'm using the donor ecu etc etc.
how low it is actually dropping on the gauge? to be honest as long as you have a bit of oil pressure at idle it should be fine, if its reving high and losing pressure then i would be worried. if it does it at high rpm i would have the sump off and check that none of the seals/o-rings on the pump etc are split caught.
dropping to 1.5psi at idle once warm now....
sensor is fine, it actually did say 0.0psi at idle, 1500rpm gives it 15psi and it rises to a max of 67psi at 7500rpm.
Does it seem like bearings may be on the way out?
Oil pressure relief valve sticking open?
This happened on my crossflow, and caused me to miss my first SVA appointment.
Had I know what it was on the day I could have fixed it in 10 minutes...
