Long story short, took the turbo off to get at something else, and noticed loads of play in it,thats lucky i thought,as the impeller hasn't touched the housing yet,so only £65 for uprated brg's and seals.then i noticed its cracked around the wastegate on the exhaust side, presumably from expansion/contraction.could of been like this for years,or recent,no idea.its about £150 for a new housing so the price is creeping towards a recon unit, which is creeping towards a hybrid!is it a common thing, like whats to say a new one wont crack first time i get it red,and i be non the wiser.do i leave it and let it play on my mind or do what i think i already know i should and save up?
the t2 in my indy (nissan ca18et) also has a crack in the wastgate area, i noticed this when i took it off to remake the oil lines, i put it back on the car and thought sod it, 2000miles later it still dosnt smoke, and when it blows up i'll fit my bigger engine.
Thats what i was thinking, and its on the right ride,if anything breaks of it should just spit out the exhaust,if it goes the other way however i'd cry!
Seems to be a common problem on the T28 though. The renault 21 was notorious for it, and was down to stress on the turbo from the exhaust. Do you have a support or is it supporting itself? Renault later went on to support the turbo to the block with a bar i think.
Oh its well braced, nothing changed from the 200sx i took it out of.its cracked internally, between the pressure and exhaust side, not like it would from undue vibration or leverage from kids burning their feet on the exhaust!never knew anything was wrong with it,held boost fine, like i said, could well of been like that when it left the nissan show room 40k ago!
Pretty common on lots of turbos as far as I can tell, seen a few toyota CT turbos cracked across the WG too.
The T28 from my Fiat Coupe was cracked around the wastegate when I rebuilt it. I agonised over it for a while then put it back together and used it. That was about 40k miles ago and it's still going strong.
