Guys, bought a vvti celica, it was damaged at the front, removed the old radiator (just bent wasnt burst) I replaced it last night, but i have tried to bleed the cooling system and am having no joy.

I filled the expansion bottle and removed the bleed screw from it, but very little water went into the system, when i pinch the main radiator hoses they feel empty, i think the car is air locked, but i was scared to keep the engine running incase i caused any over heating damage. Any body came accross this before or can help me please.

it will takes 20+ mins of idle to get warm and another 10mins overheat an engine. You want to do it quite warm as you will want the thermostat to kick in and the water pump will do most of the work. Maybe try taking off various hoses whilst the header tank is full to release any air?

Not sure if the celica is anything like the MR2, but that can be a pig to bleed! On the MR2 you have to connect 2 pipes, one to a tap on the radiator, and one on the heater hose. These need to be kept higher than the engine, then the water is poured in until the level can be seen coming up the 2 pipes, this means the air should be bled from the system.

Not sure if that is any use to your car but just my 2p worth

Unbolt the expansion tank & raise it up above the engine, suspend /tie it off to bonnet & then go through the fill process.

As Above ^^^^^^^^ On celica's there are instructions under the bonnet that show you have to raise the expansion bottle onto a bracket ( cant remember the exact details ) this raises the expansion tank to highest point in engine therefor allowing all the air to rise to the filling point.
