blacktop timing again!

OK I have the cams locked in place with 5mm bar. I cannot fing a way to lock crankshaft at TDC. Number 1 cylinder (waterpump end) is at TDC but how do I keep it there. I have removed a small plug under number 4 cylinder but there is no way or hole in crank to lock it in position.

I haven't done this but I think you need to get the crank to TDC first then lock it and the cams. If there isn't a hole there it isn't at TDC.
You are probably 180 degrees out.

There is no pins to lock the crank pulley on a zetec. Although You can get a toothed tool which locks into the ring gear and bolts to the block.

Thats what i use or a bolt in and a lever in the ring gear.

Also tip-ex is your friend.

what about these pins ?



I thought they screwed in through the side of the block and hit the crankshaft somewhere....

Correct, there are two pins shown, one for black and one for silvertop, they screw in and interfere against the crank web, holding it at tdc, but the crank needs to be kept butt up to it.

I have the lock bar for the cams, just having trouble as removed the plug in the block and rotated the crank and no hole to lock.

Is number one piston (water pump end) when its at the top is this TDC......

There is a bolt infront of the cps. You wind this out and screw in the pin. As said it just sits against the crank web so can still be rotated backwards.

Ahhhhhh, all has become clear, the crank has a flat surface on the web and the pin holds against that! Excellent. Head on tomorrow, timed up, all I need now is apparently a flywheel from a 1.8 and a release bearing/spigot brg
