Exhaust noise
Bigboystoys - 3/5/11 at 09:32 PM

Hi all hope everyone has had a nice bank holiday weekend and this morning wasn't too much of a shock to the system.
I have a question for the Bec side of this forum. I'm running a gsxr 1000 engine in my kit with a lovely 4 branch ss manifold down to a ss art can with a removable spout baffle or db killer as they are known. My question is what are other people using in terms of silencer. Mine sounds lovely in the lower rpm but when it gets up to the cruising side of things it's still so noisy. My can has a 50mm inlet. Any ideas and thoughts much appreciated.

the bike silencers are fairly quiet! what diff are you running. that makes a big diffrence at motorway speeds. it would be quieter with 3.38 than a 3.62 when sat at 70 mph.

At this second I'm running a 3.89 but in the middle of building up a 3.44. Just welding up the brackets for the trailing arms and shock mounts. Complete this weekend fingers crossed. The exhaust at the moment is a race can with just a spout baffle fitted.

Im running a Paul Gooderham can on the field with a 1900cvh, went for the largest i could comfortably fit (6inch*712mm as i recall) and i have to say although it looks cracking it still a little louder than i was hoping. not got a db reading on it and its certainly less than the origanal 4inch by 600ish but then again that was 107db and i was hopinh to be safe for 85db limit days and to be able to talk to my passenger (all be it raised voices im sure) at 60-70ish, comfortable chat at 40.

Not sure, everyone says wunoff are very quiet, but no experince of this. I guess its down to the perf tube and can wall used as well as the filling. Although i know paul advertises he uses acustafil which is ment to be the best, so i assume its not that.

That sounds a lot better, I can't talk to anyone much above 40mph. Will have to have a look on the net. Thanks for the help

I can't understand why you'd want to talk to anyone much over 40mph, it's not a shopping car

The quietness of the exhaust is always a trade off with power IME. Wear earplugs if you want to quieten the exhaust or fit an intercom if you want to chat to your passenger above 40mph. Or if you're happy to lose some performance, fit a standard exhaust can off a ZX12R or R1

Yeah, this is currently the case for me, as i say 'aiming for' im not there yet. :/

I have earplugs (google 'etymotic research' which is a good solution for one, but not two people, or trackdays.
