I think I'll end up using a Zetec for my Haynes build as I've got a MT75 box and they seem to be fairly abundant at reasonable prices.
I've searched but couldn't find a definitive guide in terms of which ones to look for. If such a thread exists, could somebody please point
me to it, otherwise just give me a brief answer.
Blacktop/Silvertop?
Which cars can I get them out of and what vintage?
Is it worth going for 1.8 or 2.0 litre? I'll probably end up boosting it mildly (7psi) on a megasquirt setup, but this isn't definite
(i've just got the bits lying around).
Basically if I'm searching for a Zetec on ebay or elsewhere - what am I looking for, or rather what's UNsuitable for use in a 7?
I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to Ford engines.. give me a SR20 any day.

Check the dates but an oldish silvertop gets you off having a cat etc. ( They're good engines too. I had one that was fine at 146000 miles and I've got one now on 100,000.) If that doesn't bother you go for a blacktop cos got more power. You might as well shop around and get a 2l at the start cos if you don't you'll always wish you had done.
So ANY ford zetec 2.0 Black-top will do (or silvertop if I settle for less power)?
There aren't any specific variants or models to avoid?
Thanks all,

Thanks all,
check out zetec-cat.com zetec engine section for power out puts and models supplied in, but basically any 2.0 is going to get you close to130bhp-135bhp, with standard induction., prolly more in a 7 with decent exhaust. people tell me oil changes are key, and look for white crud around the oil filler cap.
I have a 2.0l silvertop zetec and it runs great. If you get a good exhaust system and bike carbs fitted you can get loads of extra cheap power. If
fitting in a seven type car you will need mods to sump for ground clearance, different water pump (Rotation is opposite). A lighter flywheel also
helps with revs. Best buying one you can hear running unless it is very cheap. Price from £100
to £250 depending on condition.
We have turbo charged several zetec powered cars www.baileyperformance.co.uk
The blacktop is a better engine as the head flow slightly better, but the silvertop is much stronger, the slivertop rods are much more meaty than the
blacktop, pistons are roughly the same. (different bore size thou)
The silvertop waterpump setup is better for a kit car as it is in the block, not in a separate housing.
So, low boost use blacktop
High boost use silvertop (advise forged pistons for more that 240BHP/12PSI)
No point going for an 1800cc, 2000cc is bigger that 1800cc therefore better!!!
If you get a stock 2L zetec running right with megasquirt and T03 you will be well happy with the performance in a light car.
Having tried, several Zetecs, I'd ST170
GSX throttle bodies and an Omex made 188Hp and I haven't had the VVC plugged in yet or mapped.
