How much (if any) play is acceptable in the input shaft? I mean lateral play, not in/out.
Are there rebuild kits for the gearbox, and if so, how involved a job is it? I've done pretty much everything else on a car but never rebuilt a
diff or gearbox. Since the kit's a long way from being finished, thought this would make a nice project if I need to rebuild it.
The MT75 needs some special tools and as the box splits halfway down is not easy to rebuild.
With MT75 gearboxes being relatively cheap I would not bother, may be cheaper to just buy a spare.
You always have a little end float, nothing to be worried about, not sure how much on an MT75 but a couple of 1/4" should be fine.
Due to the input shaft being split there will be a fair amount of side to side play, but should have none in and out. As to overhaul, it's dificult to get gear spares although bearings are readily available, and a few special tools are required to strip and rebuild. The MT75 however is a pretty hardy unit and unless it has had a very hard life should be fine, and as has been said prior they are cheap as chips so better to get a replacement. HTH Ray
There isn't any in-out play, but approx 1mm each way at the tip of the input shaft (so end-to-end movement is probably 2-2.5mm)
If that's fine I'll just keep it and then replace it if it goes pop!
